The UK-China Science Bridges: R&D on (B)4G Wireless Mobile Communications (UC4G) project was awarded by the RCUK in 2009 as one of the prestigious "Science Bridges" projects. The UC4G project received a total funding of £1,134,442 (fEC) over a period of 3 years from 1 August 2009 to 30 July 2012.

The aim of the UC4G project is to promote systematic, long-term, and sustainable collaboration between the UK and China in the R&D of 4G and beyond 4G (B4G) wireless mobile communication systems. The  project capitalises on leading research  in the wireless mobile communications sector in the UK and China. Our collaboration consortiums include:

10 UK Universities: Heriot-Watt University, University of Edinburgh, University of Bristol, University of Southampton, University of Sheffield, University College London, King's College London, University of Strathclyde, University of Surrey, University of York;

1 UK Company: Mobile VCE, with 9 BigCo members (Alcatel-Lucent, BBC, Fujitsu, Huawei, NEC, Nokia Siemens Networks, Orange, Thales, Toshiba, Turner, Vodafone);

6 Chinese Universities: Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications, Huazhong  University of Science and Technology, Shandong University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Southeast University, Tsinghua University, Xidian University;

7 Chinese Companies: Shanghai Research Centre for Wireless Communications, Huawei, ZTE, China Mobile, Jushri Wireless Technologies, China Telecommunication Technology Labs.

The project is designed to enable full interaction among the project members through diverse activities including visits, staff exchanges, and workshops. It also facilitates knowledge transfer from academia to industry through technical demostrations and commercial engagements. The activities are organised into 6 work packages (WPs):

WP1: 'Kick-off' workshop with UK researchers visiting their Chinese partners.

WP2: Exchange of 30 researchers between the UK and Chinese academic consortium members.

WP3: Jointly-hold international workshops.

WP4: Prototype development and test of (B)4G wireless mobile communication technologies.

WP5: Commercialisation of mature (B)4G technologies.

WP6: Summary workshop with Chinese researchers visiting their UK partners.
